The Complete Guide to ATS-Friendly Resumes
Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) scan your resume before a recruiter ever sees it. Up to 75% of resumes are filtered out at this stage. Here's how to make sure yours gets through.
What Is an ATS?
An ATS is software that employers use to manage job applications. It parses your resume, extracts information like your name, experience, and skills, and scores you against the job description. If your resume isn't formatted correctly, the parser may miss critical details.
Formatting Rules
Stick to standard section headings like "Experience," "Education," and "Skills." Avoid tables, columns, headers/footers, and images — most ATS parsers can't read them reliably. Use a clean, single-column layout with clear hierarchy.
Keywords Matter
Mirror the language from the job description. If the posting says "project management," don't write "PM." Include both the spelled-out term and the abbreviation when space allows. LeetResume's AI can analyze a job posting and suggest which keywords to include.
File Format
PDF is generally the safest choice. It preserves formatting across devices and is supported by nearly every ATS. Avoid .docx files with complex styling, and never submit a .pages or image-based file.
Test Your Resume
Before submitting, test your resume by copying the text from your PDF and pasting it into a plain text editor. If the content comes through cleanly and in order, your ATS compatibility is strong.
